People are very CONTROVERSY over the new LACMA, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, but I just went and it's fantastic. The install smashes century and regionally based curation to bits with historical and contemporary works side by side, and a winder-wander scattering of galleries that displaces the western hegemony and actually allows you to get lost in time and place. You will no longer be able to bee-line to your favorite works of art anymore, but you will see everything with new eyes and encounter diverse perspectives at every turn. It has its issues...time of day makes a difference, lighting is inconsistent, there are some truly bizarre pedestal choices, and sometimes there's random performance art which can be great or horrid, but you know what? A new and unexpected experience in a museum is a rare treat, enjoy!
