Upon seeing his first daguerreotype, French painter Paul Delaroche (1797–1856) famously proclaimed, “From today, painting is dead!” He gets re-quoted every time someone wants to declare painting dead, but it's never been dead...there are still more painting exhibitions each year than any other medium. (I've counted.) In actuality, photography liberated painting to move beyond representation. Now of course, analog photography has been declared dead, but we all now that's also not true.
